Center Official Says Concerns Of 5 Southern States To Be Taken Care Of During Lok Sabha Seats Delimitation


Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Preparations are being made to hold the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Besides, this year the central government will also do the work of conducting census. This census will be conducted after the Lok Sabha elections. On the basis of this census, delimitation of Lok Sabha seats will be done after 2026. During this delimitation, special care will be taken of all the concerns of the five southern states so that they do not suffer any harm in the new delimitation based on population.

A senior central government official assured on Tuesday (January 2) that this process will not have any negative impact on the five states and appealed to them not to have any apprehension regarding the process.

Delimitation means the work or process of determining the boundaries of constituencies (Lok Sabha and Assembly) in a country or states. The work of delimitation is entrusted to an empowered commission. This body is known as Delimitation Commission or Border Commission.

Delimitation Commission was formed four times in the country

Delimitation Commission has been constituted 4 times in India. The Delimitation Commission was constituted in 1952 under the Delimitation Commission Act 1952, in 1963 under the Delimitation Commission Act 1962, in 1973 under the Delimitation Act 1972 and in 2002 under the Delimitation Act 2002.

The official said, “The census will be conducted after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After the census is over, the constituencies will be delimited on the basis of the upcoming census. The concerns of the southern states will be taken into account during delimitation.

Southern states succeeded in stopping population growth

The southern states – Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana – have succeeded in curbing their population growth through various family planning measures. Many leaders of South Indian states have expressed concern that due to North India’s large population, it will get more seats and states that have controlled the population will be under-represented.

The official said, “We understand the concerns of the southern states and will develop a way to ensure that their proportional representation remains intact.” They will not have to suffer the consequences of this.

Women quota will be implemented after completion of census and delimitation

After the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in Parliament, the debate on delimitation started. Quota for women can be implemented only after the census and delimitation is completed. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin had expressed concern over the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats and described it as a ‘sword’ hanging over the state. Stalin became Prime Minister Narendra Modi Also urged to remove the fear of southern states.

‘KTR calls for unity against ‘injustice”

KT Rama Rao, working president of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi, which ruled Telangana for 10 years, had said that now the time has come for all political parties in the south to come together and represent the government through the process of delimitation of Lok Sabha seats after 2026.
